Creating a Rainbow Bubble Brush

After making the Star Brush, I started noodling around with some of the additional features under Brush Controls to see what else the system was capable of doing and came up with this interesting variation that allows painting a kind of rainbow series of bubbles that change size with the speed of the brush.

I started with the Seurat variant of the Artists Brushes. This brush already paints with a dispersed series of dots that already use Color Variability to paint in different hues.

To get even greater variety, I went into the Art Materials:Color to increase the variety of hues to their maximum extent to get a full rainbow effect. Normally, the Color Variability bars are not displayed, so click the double-boxes next to the "X" at the top right of the palette to expand it. I moved the hues slider all the way to +/- 50% which gives access to the full rainbow.

I then went to Brush Controls:Size and increased the brush size to 12.6 and the +/- slider to 2.07. The +/- slider determines the variability of the smallest and largest brush size. The Advanced Controls: Sliders was brought up from the Controls Menu and I set the size relationship to Velocity on the slider. That way, the speed I drag the brush determines the size of the bubbles with faster strokes resulting in smaller circles

I wanted the bubbles to be spaced apart and spacing gets set on the Controls Menu\Spacing... entry. Setting Spacing to 75% results in just a little overlap (100% would place them end to end.

Don't forget to save the brush as a new variant so that it can be used in drawing projects.

Below are a few variations of this brush by changing the brush tips:

This is the original brush designed to have a bubble effect with the outlining edge.

Switching to the 1-pixel edge gives a hard circular look.

A dull profile almost gives a fairy dust type of appearance.

Changing any of the other parameters will also give a different brush look. This exercise provides only a slight example of some of the alterations that can be made to a brush to create an entirely new brush.
