Creating Web Backgrounds with Papers

Painter 5 has a number of papers that can be used to create web backgrounds. The Painter CD-ROM contains many additional papers that can be loaded as libraries at \Stuff\Papers. There are 22 libraries, each holding about a dozen paper types. The Invert Paper check box on the Paper Palette will create a negative image of the paper which almost effectively doubles the number of paper images available.

Papers are basically seamless tiles, so it doesn't take very much work to turn them into something that can be used on the web. Pick a paper type from the Art Materials:Paper Palette. For this exercise, I picked Crackle and scaled it to 57% because I wanted a finer pattern to work with.  Take note of the size, 145x145 because that's the size of the seamless tile.  This size changes as the scale is changed.

At the main menu, start a new file by File New. The file size must have the same pixel width and height height as the paper size. Click OK after setting the size to 145x145 pixels.

Fill the new file with a color using the Fill Tool .

From the main menu, choose Effects, Surface Control, Apply Surface Texture. Set the Using drop down menu to Paper. This will imprint the new file with the paper pattern. Use Softness to smooth the texture. Decrease the Material Amount setting to drop the contrast in the texture of the cracks. It's always important to remember that text has to go on top of the image, so deep contrasts between light and dark areas of the image need to be minimized. Click OK.
Back at the main menu, use Effects, Tonal Control, Brightness/Contrast to further lower the contrast of the image and lighten it a little more. Save the background as a GIF file and it's ready to be used as a web background, as it is here.
